For the American newspaper, the Italian premier has a unique position in Europe: “Potential ally, but collaborative with the EU”

Giorgia Meloni’s visit to the White House, scheduled for tomorrow, is seen by the New York Times as a potential turning point in relations between Italy and the United States under President Trump. According to the newspaper, the mission of the Italian premier – the latest in a series of European leaders who have tried to get closer to the current US president – raises “more hopes than fears” due to the “unique position she occupies on the continent”.

Her right-wing political background – notes the NYT – has long placed her as a possible natural ally of Trump, so much so that she was among the few European leaders invited to the inauguration ceremony. This proximity has fuelled speculation about an “Italy-first” approach, with the possibility of Meloni seeking bilateral agreements at the expense of European unity.

However, the newspaper refutes this reading, citing officials and diplomats who describe the premier as collaborative in the European sphere, pointing out that in recent months she has taken a more pragmatic role and is more attentive to EU cohesion.

For some observers, the visit represents a great political opportunity for Italy, especially in light of the negotiations on trade and defence. For others, it is an important test of whether Meloni will be able to use her rapport with Trump to strengthen Italy’s position in a Europe facing growing geopolitical challenges.
