Kremlin downplays US president’s claims and remains open to dialogue
Donald Trump has expressed his irritation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in particular over statements regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom Putin has called illegitimate and proposed subjecting to UN scrutiny to facilitate negotiations. The US president, who is working to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, publicly expressed his anger in an interview with NBC News, stating: ‘I’m very angry with Putin’.
Despite Trump’s discontent, the Kremlin maintains a diplomatic stance. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the US president’s statements, downplaying their importance and emphasising that ‘if necessary, talks between the two leaders will be organised quickly’. He also claimed that some of Trump’s statements would be misunderstood or paraphrased, questioning the veracity of the quotes reported by the media.
Meanwhile, the Russian media avoided emphasising Trump’s critical tone towards Putin. Rossiya 1 and NTV, two major Russian channels, broadcast selected excerpts of the interview, focusing mainly on Trump’s determination to resolve the conflict and his candidacy in the next presidential election, omitting the US president’s harsher comments.
Despite Trump’s disappointment, Moscow seems willing to keep diplomatic channels open for new negotiations, with the aim of managing the complex situation in Ukraine and finding a solution that satisfies both sides.
