Israel releases 183 Palestinians: arabic writing on bracelets ‘The eternal people do not forget’
Palestinian prisoners held in Ketziot and Ofer jails released under agreement
Israel has released 183 Palestinian detainees from prisons in Ketziot, in the Negev, and Ofer, in the West Bank, as part of the first phase of the agreement with Hamas that led to the release of Yarden Bibas, Ofer Calderon and Keith Siegel.
According to reports in the Israeli press, the detainees were released with white bracelets bearing Arabic and Hebrew inscriptions, including phrases such as ‘The eternal people do not forget’ and ‘I chased my enemies and caught them’, along with a Star of David flag.
A spokesman for the Israeli Prison Service, quoted by Haaretz, said: ‘The fighters who were in prison are among Israel’s worst enemies and until the last moment on Israeli soil they will be treated with prison-like rules. We will not compromise on the security of our people’.
The release is part of the understanding reached between Israel and Hamas, which provides for the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the return of Israeli hostages.
