A 37-year-old man attacked at knifepoint during a demonstration. Two officers are seriously injured, the Islamist terrorist trail is the favoured one
A new attack has shaken France. One person died and five municipal police officers were injured in Mulhouse, Alsace, during an attack that took place on the sidelines of a demonstration near the city’s covered market. The suspect, a 37-year-old man of Algerian origin, was arrested after shouting ‘Allah Akbar’, according to witnesses quoted by local media.
The attacker, already on the list for the prevention of terrorist radicalisation (Fsprt), was required to leave France. Two of the wounded officers are in serious condition: one hit in the carotid artery and the other in the chest, as confirmed by prosecutor Nicolas Heitz. Three other officers were more slightly injured.
The national anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation, and Mulhouse mayor Michèle Lutz said that the Islamist terrorism track is currently the most credible one. President Emmanuel Macron commented on the incident saying that there is no doubt about the terrorist origin of the attack, and reiterated the government’s commitment to fight terrorism.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau will travel to the scene to closely follow developments and provide further details on the incident.
