Police release pictures and details of Brian Thompson’s murder as insurance motive grows stronger

The New York Police Department is stepping up its investigation into the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, releasing two never-before-seen photos of the suspect, portrayed this time barefaced. Officers are using advanced facial recognition technology to identify him and have announced a $10,000 reward for anyone who provides information crucial to his arrest and conviction. The murder, which took place in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, is described by investigators as a planned and targeted attack.

Among the details that emerged, one in particular struck investigators: on the shell casings recovered at the crime scene were engraved words such as Deny, Defend and Depose. According to reports by ABC News, these seem to recall the title of a 2010 book written by Jay M. Feinman, Delay, Deny, Defend, a scathing critique of the insurance industry and its methods of avoiding compensating customers. Investigators believe it plausible that the killer chose these engravings as a symbolic message, perhaps related to the victim’s profession.

Surveillance camera footage from a nearby nightclub and footage recorded at the Hilton Hotel, the scene of the murder, show the suspect with his face partially covered, a hood up and a backpack on his shoulders. These clues strengthen the conviction that it is the same person depicted in the photos released today.

In parallel, investigators are checking out the trail of threats received by Thompson. The victim’s wife revealed that her husband had been the target of intimidation in the weeks leading up to the murder, adding another piece to an investigation that points to a professional motive.
