The president rules out resignation and prepares to look for a premier who can form a government representing all political forces

In his address to the nation, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he will appoint a new prime minister in the coming days, following the censure vote against Michel Barnier’s government. The decision, which comes after post-European election political difficulties, marks a new chapter in the country’s governance.

Macron acknowledged that the decision to dissolve the National Assembly in June was not well understood and admitted he takes responsibility for it. However, he wished to thank the resigning premier Michel Barnier for his commitment and dedication, pointing out that he had shown capacity when many others were unable to do so.

The president made it clear that the new premier will have the task of forming a ‘government of general interest’, seeking to include all political forces that are willing to participate and pledging to avoid new censure. The new government’s priority will be to manage the country’s budget.

Macron also ruled out his resignation, demanded by the opposition, stating that his term of office will last until 2027 and that he will continue to work for the stability of institutions and the protection of French citizens. The president reiterated the importance of focusing on action over the next 30 months.
