7.3 magnitude earthquake hits Vanuatu: severe damage and tsunami warning averted

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale has struck the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu, causing severe damage especially in the capital Port Vila. The quake triggered a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.
Among the damaged buildings were also the headquarters of several embassies. The United States has decided to close its representation until further notice due to the ‘considerable damage’ suffered. The embassies of France, the United Kingdom and New Zealand also suffered significant damage.
