Clash between Washington and Beijing over tariffs and rare earths intensifies

US-China tensions over tariffs. US President Donald Trump has announced a possible massive increase in tariffs on Chinese products in response to Beijing’s restrictions on rare earth exports. In a post on Truth Social, Trump explained that “there are many other countermeasures under serious consideration” and accused China of “becoming very hostile.”

The White House leader then added that “in two weeks, I am supposed to meet with President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, but now there seems to be no reason to do so,” effectively freezing the bilateral summit.

US-China tension: meeting with Xi at APEC summit could be canceled

The meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping was initially announced by the US president himself after a telephone conversation on September 19, in which the two leaders expressed their intention to meet at the APEC summit and to continue contacts in 2026 with reciprocal visits. However, China had never officially confirmed the prospect of a meeting.

Trump’s move marks a new hardening in relations between Washington and Beijing, already tense due to economic and technological competition. The reference to rare earths, a strategic resource for the electronics and military industries, confirms that the trade dispute between the two powers is widening again, just a few months after the tycoon’s return to the White House.
