Shots fired at civilians at a bus stop: among the victims, a young Spaniard

Jerusalem was hit by a new attack on the morning of Monday, 8 September. At the intersection in Ramot, a neighbourhood in the north of the city, two armed men opened fire on people waiting at a bus stop. The attack left six people dead and several wounded. The two assailants, both Palestinians from villages in the West Bank near Ramallah, were shot dead by a security officer and an armed civilian who intervened immediately after the attack.

The victims and the wounded

The toll is dramatic: six lives lost, including that of Yaakov Pinto, 25, originally from Melilla, Spain, who had moved to Israel and recently got married. Two other young men in their early thirties who were on the bus lost their lives along with him, as well as a man and a woman in their fifties. Twelve people were admitted to city hospitals, seven in serious condition.

Netanyahu at the scene of the massacre

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately convened an emergency meeting with defence leaders and, shortly afterwards, arrived at the scene of the attack. From Jerusalem, he spoke of a “broad and continuous war against terrorism on all fronts”, reiterating his intention to destroy Hamas and free the hostages still in the hands of the Islamist movement. Netanyahu recalled that in the last year, the security services had foiled hundreds of attacks, but admitted that “unfortunately, this morning it was not possible”.

Political reactions in Israel

The harshest words came from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who accused the Palestinian National Authority of “educating its children to kill Jews” and called for its elimination. Smotrich also called for drastic military action against the attackers’ villages of origin, praising the courage of those who stopped them.

Hamas and Jihad rejoice

On the Palestinian front, Hamas called the assault a “heroic operation”, but did not claim responsibility for it. In a statement, the movement spoke of a response “to the crimes of the occupation and the war of extermination against our people”, calling on Palestinians in the West Bank to intensify the struggle.

Islamic Jihad also applauded the attack, calling it a “legitimate response” to Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank, and celebrating the two men who opened fire in Jerusalem.
