The three European countries have initiated a “snapback” against Tehran over its nuclear programme
NEW YORK – Germany, France and Great Britain have decided to reinstate international sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme. The announcement was formally presented to the United Nations Security Council in a letter in which London, Paris and Berlin announced the activation of the “snapback” mechanism provided for in the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Tehran’s reaction was not long in coming. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi had already warned the three countries: ‘If this step is taken, the exchanges initiated with the International Atomic Energy Agency will be completely compromised and will probably cease,’ he said on state television.
Iran considers the decision a direct blow to cooperation with the IAEA, which in recent months had resumed a channel of monitoring and discussion on the nuclear dossier. Now the European move risks bringing the crisis back to a terrain of strong diplomatic tension.
