In Plateau, an ambush caused at least 27 deaths — many of the victims slaughtered with machetes — and numerous injuries. Investigations point the finger at Fulani herdsmen

Last night, the community of Jebu-Rahoss, in the central state of Plateau (Nigeria), was devastated by a ferocious attack: at least 27 civilians were killed and many others were seriously injured.

The attackers — identified by witnesses as militiamen believed to belong to the Fulani pastoralist community — stormed the village armed with rifles and machetes, taking their victims by surprise in their sleep. Some of the bodies were found severely disfigured, in some cases burned beyond recognition.

‘We heard gunshots and screams in the middle of the night. Many were stabbed, other victims were burned,‘ said a survivor who considers himself ’very lucky” to have been in a different area of the community.

The attack comes amid growing tension in Plateau State, the scene of violent conflicts between Muslim herders and Christian farmers, often triggered by disputes over access to land and resources. In recent months, violent incidents have intensified, with similar raids and armed clashes already causing dozens of casualties and disrupting entire communities.

Local authorities are thoroughly investigating the attack, gathering testimonies and collecting evidence at the scene. This is likely to be the first step towards a broader security operation aimed at preventing further massacres and restoring order.
