Keith Kellogg hits back at Putin: no to immediate talks, we need a total pause in the fighting first
Keith Kellogg, military adviser and former general chosen by Donald Trump as special envoy for the Ukraine crisis, clearly indicated the US administration’s line: first an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, then a negotiating table to discuss a comprehensive peace.
‘Not the other way around,’ Kellogg pointed out, in a clear reference to recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who had instead hinted at a readiness for immediate political confrontation.
The message from Trump’s envoy comes at a delicate phase of the conflict, with the arrival of summer and new offensives on the eastern front. The ceasefire proposed by Kellogg envisages a total stop to military operations on both sides, without preconditions, as an initial gesture of détente.
The US proposal, if formalised, could mark a first step towards a new diplomatic phase in the conflict, but it remains to be seen what the concrete response of the Kremlin and the Kiev government will be.
