Washington is considering moving the nuclear talks from Oman to a closer European location; Geneva and the Italian capital are in the field
The United States is considering moving the venue for the indirect talks with Iran from Oman to a “closer” European location. This was revealed by the New York Times, citing US administration sources. The next round of talks between Washington and Tehran on the nuclear programme could thus slip by about two weeks from the originally scheduled date of Saturday 3 May.
According to the sources, after the third round held yesterday in Muscat, the US needs more time to examine the information and proposals received from Iran. Among the alternative venues under consideration are Geneva, which has already hosted previous international negotiations on Iran, and Rome, where the second round was held on 19 April at the Omani embassy.
According to the Italian news agency Adnkronos, Italy has reiterated its willingness to play the role of “facilitator”. The subject was also reportedly addressed in the recent telephone conversation between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Sultan of Oman Haytham bin Tariq Al Said.
