Donald Trump freezes reciprocal tariffs with the European Union for 90 days, paving the way for new economic talks
As of today, the US has suspended reciprocal tariffs on goods from many countries for 90 days, with the exception of China. This decision was taken by President Donald Trump with the intention of easing economic tensions with trade allies, in particular with the European Union.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the suspension, stating that it was ‘an important step towards stabilising the global economy’. In a message on social media, she emphasised that ‘clear and predictable conditions’ are necessary for the smooth functioning of supply chains, and that duties are taxes that mainly penalise businesses and consumers.
Von der Leyen reiterated the EU’s position in favour of a ‘zero-to-zero’ tariff agreement with the US, a proposal that aims to eliminate trade barriers between the two powers. In addition, he reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to negotiate constructively with the US to achieve smoother and mutually beneficial trade.
Meanwhile, the EU had already reacted to the US tightening of tariffs by imposing duties on a range of US goods, with tariffs ranging from 10% to 25%. Trump’s decision to suspend reciprocal duties could be a sign of openness to new negotiations, which could lead to an easing of tariff measures, fostering a more relaxed economic climate.
