After a blackout caused by a fire in an electrical substation, flights resume from Heathrow airport. An investigation into the incident has been launched
The first flights have finally resumed at Heathrow Airport, London, after a fire broke out in an electrical substation causing a blackout and forcing the temporary closure of the airport. A British Airways flight landed from Gatwick around 6pm local time, marking the start of the resumption of operations.
The first take-off took place around 9pm local time with a flight to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, followed by seven other flights. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praised the airport’s contingency plans, describing the incident as an ‘unprecedented situation’ and assuring that measures to protect key systems worked as planned.
An investigation was launched to clarify the cause of the fire, also involving the counter-terrorism services, as the incident occurred in a sensitive security area. Operations were suspended for most of the day, but the situation is now slowly returning to normal.
