Moscow shoots down 132 Ukrainian drones, while Kiev reports 171 Russian attacks. Escalating conflict complicates President Trump’s mediation efforts

In a new chapter in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both sides accuse each other of launching drone attacks overnight. Moscow claimed to have shot down 132 Ukrainian drones in the regions of Saratov, Voronezh and Belgorod. The Russian Defence Ministry specified that 54 drones were intercepted in the Saratov region, 40 in Voronezh, and another 22 in Belgorod. These air defence operations, according to the Tass news agency, are part of a series of attacks that have intensified hostilities between the two countries in recent weeks.

On the other hand, Kiev has accused Russia of launching 171 drones in a series of night attacks, as stated by the Ukrainian Air Force. According to the Ukrainian forces, 75 drones were shot down in 12 different regions of the country, while 63 others disappeared from radar without causing significant damage. Local Ukrainian sources point out that the attacks are continuing to put pressure on the country’s defences, already worn down after months of conflict.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end the conflict are running into difficulties, with the parties involved seeming unwilling to give ground. Military drone operations and continued attacks amidst mutual accusations are further complicating the road to a stable ceasefire.

This escalation comes at a critical time for the international community, which is trying to mediate between the two nations, but the cross-accusations and increased military attacks risk scuppering any attempt at dialogue.
