U.S. proposed deal to extend ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could lead to release of all hostages by April

With minutes to go before the expiration of the 42-day initial ceasefire in Gaza, Israel has decided to support the U.S. proposal to extend the ceasefire with Hamas until Ramadan and Passover, two holidays that overlap this year, covering the period from March 29 to April 20. The proposal, made by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, calls for the release of all hostages held by Hamas.

According to the plan, half of the hostages should be released as early as the first day of the extended cease-fire, while the remainder would be released at the end of the period if a permanent cease-fire is reached. Israel has indicated its willingness to further discuss the details of the plan with Hamas if the organization agrees to go ahead.

However, Hamas has shown some resistance, rejecting Tel Aviv’s proposed wording for extending the truce. The organization insists on a complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and an end to the siege. Hamas also reiterated its categorical rejection of any outside interference or imposed administrations.

Meanwhile, Hamas released a new video depicting some of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip since the October 7, 2023 attack. These include Eitan Horn, still a captive, who in the video appeals to the Israeli government to continue with the truce agreement to secure the release of the remaining hostages. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called the video “another brutal example of propaganda,” saying that Israel will not be swayed by these media maneuvers and will continue to work to bring all hostages home.

While negotiations continue, it remains to be seen whether Hamas will accept the extension of the ceasefire and whether a stable agreement will be reached. Israel has reiterated its commitment to negotiate firmly, promising to work relentlessly to achieve all the goals set out in the truce.
