According to Politico, President Donald Trump will start the plan to detain migrants involved in illegal immigration at Guantanamo Bay this weekend
Over the weekend, the Pentagon will launch Donald Trump’s announced plan to send migrants to Guantanamo Bay, with the aim of using the base in Cuba as a detention centre as part of his strategy to crack down on illegal immigration. This was reported by the news site Politico.
The plan, which is still being finalised, calls for flights to depart from various points in the US, with Guantanamo as the final destination. While the military has already carried out numerous deportation flights to Latin America, this will be the first time migrants will be sent to the Cuban military base, bringing with it new logistical and legal challenges.
On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order authorising the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to use Guantánamo as a detention facility for migrants. The goal is to house up to 30,000 people, a number that far exceeds the 780 detainees the base housed during the peak of the war on terror.
This new measure is part of a broader plan to combat illegal immigration, but raises concerns about costs and political implications. ICE, the federal agency in charge of immigration, will be responsible for running the centre, but the Guantanamo facility has traditionally been used for monitoring migrants, not for housing such large numbers of detainees.
Currently, some Haitian and Cuban refugees are housed in the Guantanamo Migrant Operations Centre, but the expansion plan represents a leap in size and complexity. Trump’s new policy marks a significant shift in immigration management, but it is not without risks and operational difficulties.
