A patient hospitalised with a severe infection reports the first serious case in the country. CDC: ‘Public health risk remains low’
The US has reported the first severe case of H5N1 avian influenza, with one patient hospitalised in Louisiana. The case, confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is linked to exposure to sick birds on a backyard farm, the first of its kind in the country. The CDC stated that although it is an expected case, the risk to public health remains low, as no person-to-person transmission has been detected.
The CDC recommends precautions for those in contact with infected or potentially infected animals, such as the use of personal protective equipment, especially for farm owners, hunters and bird enthusiasts.
