Agreement in sight between Israel and Hamas for ceasefire and hostage release. Talks advanced between the parties involved, with Qatar playing a central role

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held for over a year are at a ‘crucial’ stage, according to the pan-Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat. Sources close to the talks report that ‘the agreement will be finalised once the final details are finalised’, including the names of the living hostages and Palestinian prisoners. The release of 30 hostages by Hamas is expected in return for the release of an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners, many of them sentenced to life imprisonment.

A key meeting is expected in Doha between CIA Director William Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Axios reported. Hamas described the talks as ‘serious and positive’, indicating that a prisoner exchange and ceasefire would be possible, provided Israel does not impose any new conditions.

However, Israeli sources maintain reservations, claiming that an understanding is not imminent. Meanwhile, the UN has complained about the blockade of humanitarian aid to northern Gaza, with Israel continuing to refuse to deliver aid to several besieged areas.
