Moscow announces countermeasures to Ukrainian missile attack as death toll rises in Zaporizhzhia and Chancellor Scholz confirms willingness to maintain dialogue with Putin

Russia has declared that it will ‘compulsorily’ respond to the attack conducted by the Ukrainian armed forces against the military airport in Taganrog, Rostov region. The attack, which was carried out using American Atacms missiles, prompted the Kremlin to threaten retaliation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov clarified that ‘the response will come’, indicating that Moscow will decide when and how to intervene. The attack represents a new escalation in the conflict, confirming the West’s military support for Ukraine.

Zaporizhzhia under attack: death toll rises

The toll of the Russian attack that hit the Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia on Tuesday continues to worsen. The regional governor, Ivan Fedorov, confirmed that the discovery of a woman’s body under the rubble brought the death toll to 10. A further 22 people were injured in the attack, which hit a clinic and an office building in the city centre. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, condemned the ‘brutal’ Russian attack, renewing his appeal to Western allies to provide more air defence systems, considered crucial to protect civilian infrastructure.

Scholz reiterates dialogue with Putin despite difficulties

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared his intention to keep the channel of communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin open, despite the difficulties and disappointing results of the last telephone conversation last month. Scholz described the conversation as ‘frustrating’, with Putin repeating his usual arguments. However, the chancellor explained that the dialogue was useful to reiterate that Germany will continue to support Ukraine and that Russia must withdraw its troops to lay the groundwork for peace. Scholz emphasised that despite the lack of progress, he intends to continue to seek dialogue.

Tension in Chechnya: soldiers injured in drone attack

In Chechnya, four soldiers were slightly injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on a barracks. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov threatened ‘revenge’ against Kiev, saying that the attack will only strengthen the resolve of his men. The drone was shot down, but its explosion damaged the roof of the barracks and caused a fire that was promptly extinguished. Kadyrov stated that a reserve of 84,000 Chechen volunteers is ready to take the field to support the Russian offensive.
