World Cup: venues officially assigned for 2030 and 2034
A centenary tournament spread over three continents, then Saudi Arabia in 2034
FIFA has made official the venues for the next World Cup, with a centenary edition that will be historic in its organisation. The 2030 tournament will take place in Spain, Morocco and Portugal, with three opening matches hosted in South America (Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay), to celebrate 100 years since the first edition, played in Uruguay in 1930. For the first time, the World Cup will be organised by three different continental confederations.
Saudi Arabia in the spotlight in 2034
For the next edition, in 2034, FIFA awarded the organisation to Saudi Arabia, which was the only candidate. The country, which has invested heavily in football in recent years, will host the tournament using the criterion of rotation between continents. However, high summer temperatures could lead to a postponement of the competition in the winter months, as happened in Qatar in 2022.
A decision without surprises
The allocations, decided at a virtual FIFA congress, did not hold any particular surprises, as both bids had no competitors. This choice consolidates FIFA’s strategy of taking the tournament to territories that represent new development opportunities for football, as well as paying homage to the history and traditions of the game.
A global impact
The 2030 edition represents a bridge between tradition and innovation, celebrating the centenary of the tournament with a symbolic reminder of its South American origins while embracing Europe and Africa. By 2034, Saudi Arabia is preparing to showcase its organisational capacity, bolstered by its investment in football and ambitions to become a central player on the international sporting scene.
