The WHO reports that more than 80 per cent of the samples tested from cases of the mystery disease tested positive for malaria, while the Congo government remains on high alert for numerous cases of the disease, mainly among children
Malaria was detected in 10 of 12 samples taken from patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). More than 80% of initial tests confirmed the mosquito-borne infection, suggesting that malaria may be responsible for many of the cases reported in the remote Panzi region, where more than 400 infections and 31 deaths have been recorded since October.
Despite the significant number of sick people, the WHO reassures that there are no signs of a new disease spreading rapidly. Samples will still be tested for other pathogens, with results expected in the coming days. The Congolese government remains on alert, as the majority of patients are children under the age of five, a particularly vulnerable population due to malnutrition.
