The authorities investigate the cause of the explosion while the emergency services intervene

This morning, an explosion and subsequent fire in an apartment building in The Hague left 20 people dead and injured. The incident also led to the destruction of five flats. The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and emergency services have been on the scene throughout the morning.

The explosion occurred at around 6.15 a.m. in the Mariahoeve district of The Hague. Witnesses reported hearing a loud roar that shook nearby buildings and was audible from miles away. The explosion caused part of the three-storey building to collapse and a vast fire quickly spread, engulfing parts of the structure in thick black smoke.

Rescuers, including fire brigades, helicopters and ambulances, worked tirelessly to rescue people trapped under the rubble. So far, four people, including a child, have been taken to hospital. The search for survivors continues, with specialised urban search and rescue teams deployed on site.
The cause of the explosion is still unclear and investigators are gathering evidence to determine whether it was accidental or deliberate. The incident prompted local authorities to urge residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke and to turn off ventilation systems
