Europe Must Prepare for Potential Russian Attack, Military Leaders Warn
Top German and UK military officials urge citizens to strengthen defense readiness amid rising Russian military threats
Growing Risk of Russian Aggression in Europe – European citizens face a potential threat of Russian attacks, according to senior military leaders from Germany and the United Kingdom. In a joint article published in The Guardian and Die Welt, General Inspector of the Bundeswehr Carsten Breuer and UK Chief of Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton emphasized the need for preparedness in the face of Moscow’s expanding military posture.
Russia’s Military Expansion
The generals note that Russia is reorganizing its forces and learning from the conflict in Ukraine. “Its forces are rearming and adapting in ways that could increase the risk of conflict with NATO countries,” Breuer and Knighton wrote. They warned that Moscow’s willingness to declare war on the continent, as shown in Ukraine, presents a growing challenge requiring collective attention.
Strengthening Europe’s Defense Capabilities
Breuer and Knighton stressed that Europe must not only maintain defensive readiness but also expand its defense industry. “Ukraine demonstrates that industrial bases are crucial to support and ultimately win any major war,” the generals stated. They emphasized that the effort is not driven by belligerence but by a moral responsibility to protect populations and preserve peace.
Deterrence Through Strength
“The presence of strong defenses discourages aggression, while weakness invites it,” Breuer and Knighton wrote. Their appeal calls for European nations to act proactively to safeguard security, avoid complacency, and ensure that military capabilities are aligned with current and future threats.
