EU-UK, post-Brexit agreement on defence, energy and fisheries until 2038
Agreement on three key texts: strategic partnership in security, full access to territorial waters and shared standards on health and food. No agreement on youth mobility
A new agreement between the EU and the UK marks a turning point in the post-Brexit relationship, with agreement reached on three key texts that strengthen cooperation in strategic areas such as security, energy and fisheries. The announcement came from Brussels, where diplomatic sources speak of a ‘new page’ in bilateral relations.
On the defence front, a structured partnership on security has been defined, while in the energy field the understanding aims to strengthen integration and joint resilience. A long-term solution was also reached on the sensitive issue of fisheries: until 30 June 2038, the EU and the UK will guarantee mutual access to each other’s territorial waters, a crucial point for countries such as France.
On the regulatory side, there is a no-deadline agreement on health and food safety, harmonising sanitary and phytosanitary standards for food exchanged between the two sides of the Channel.
On the other hand, the issue of youth and student mobility, which still lacks a concrete solution, remains unresolved. The texts of the agreement only contain general references to possible future agreements.
The overall package received the unanimous support of the 27 EU member states and London, where negotiations lasted until the last moment. The written procedure for formal approval is currently underway, the positive outcome of which is considered a foregone conclusion.
