Tensions over Panama Canal, clash between US and local authorities over transit fees
US State Department announces exemption for government ships, but Panama Canal Authority denies toll changes
The US State Department has announced that US government ships will no longer have to pay transit fees in the Panama Canal, a decision that – according to Washington – will save millions of dollars annually. However, the Panama Canal Authority immediately denied the news, saying it had not changed the toll system and confirming its willingness to enter into dialogue with the US on the transit of its warships.
The issue could fuel tensions between the two countries, at a time when the control and management of the Canal remains an issue of strategic and economic importance.
