Israeli government approves ceasefire agreement with Hamas
After the security cabinet gave the go-ahead, the executive votes 24 in favour and 8 against. The agreement will enter into force on Sunday, but could face legal challenges
The Israeli government approved the ceasefire agreement with Hamas in a vote that ended with 24 ministers in favour and 8 against. The decision follows the security cabinet’s approval on Friday. According to reports in the Jewish media, the understanding provides for the ceasefire to come into effect from Sunday.
Opponents of the agreement could now petition the High Court of Justice to challenge the release of Palestinian security prisoners under the agreement. However, the court is unlikely to intervene to block the process.
