Syria, jihadists advance towards Damascus: new gains and increasing tensions
Rebels take key positions as the regime attempts to resist
The jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, together with allied anti-regime factions, continue to gain ground in Syria, drawing ever closer to Damascus. After the conquest of Hama, the insurgents took control of the strategic district of Rasten in the province of Homs, opening a key access route to the Syrian capital. The news was reported by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on ‘X’ that the jihadists are now only five kilometres away from Homs.
Meanwhile, air raids were conducted to hit the Al-Rastan bridge, which connects Hama to Homs, a strategic infrastructure for the rebels. The attacks, according to Observatory activists, are aimed at stopping the advance of the jihadists and protecting the city of Homs from falling into rebel hands.
‘Fighter jets carried out repeated bombardments on the bridge and surrounding areas, with the intention of disrupting the route between Hama and Homs, while ensuring the security of the city,’ the UK-based Observatory explained.
