The leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham stresses the importance of a census to include the Syrian diaspora in future general elections
Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, stated that Syria will ensure the necessary conditions for holding parliamentary elections, but pointed out that almost half of the population lives abroad. ‘A census is necessary,’ al-Jawlani said in an exclusive interview with Rai Tg1, explaining that the previous regime prevented Syrians abroad from maintaining legal ties with the motherland.
The role of the Syrian diaspora
According to al-Jawlani, many Syrians abroad do not have official documents such as passports due to the restrictions imposed by the previous regime. The new government, he added, will need time to contact the Syrian community abroad and complete a census before holding elections.
