Four arrests after Take Back Power group action at the Tower of London
The Tower of London was the scene of a sensational act this morning when four people were arrested after smearing food on the display case housing the Imperial Crown, one of the most iconic pieces of the Crown Jewels. The incident took place around 11 a.m., with officers quickly intervening to apprehend those responsible, who were charged with criminal damage.
The Jewel House, the exhibition centrepiece of the fortress, has been closed to the public while investigations continue. Responsibility for the action was claimed by the environmentalist and anti-establishment group Take Back Power, which describes itself as a “non-violent civil resistance” movement.
Video of the action and the group’s claims
In the video posted on social media by the collective, a protester is seen approaching the display case and smashing a large tray of apple crumble wrapped in foil against the glass. Immediately afterwards, a second activist overturns a tub full of yellow cream. A dramatic gesture accompanied by shouts and slogans: ‘Democracy has collapsed,“ shouts one of those present, while another adds that ‘Britain is destroyed”.
According to the group, the action at the Tower of London is a way of calling for the establishment of a “People’s House”, a permanent assembly of citizens with the power to tax “extreme wealth” and reform the country.
Four arrests and ongoing investigations
The London police confirmed the four arrests and announced that the Jewel House will remain temporarily closed to allow for investigations, while the damage to the display case will be assessed. The incident has reignited the debate on the security of the Crown Jewels and the increasingly visible initiatives of protest movements.
