Elon Musk relaunches his proposal to abolish the European Union on X, while the EU Commission fines his platform for violations of the DSA
‘The EU must be abolished’. With these words, Elon Musk has sparked a new debate on European sovereignty and the role of the Union. The tycoon, a former adviser to the Trump administration until May 2025, posted the message on his X platform, adding that national governments should have greater autonomy to represent the citizens of their respective countries.
Musk’s intervention comes at a delicate time, especially for his business. After almost two years of investigation, the European Commission has notified X of a decision of non-compliance for violations of the Digital Services Act, imposing a fine of €120 million. The fine was also commented on by JD Vance, US Vice President, who criticised the European decision.
Among the alleged violations are the “misleading” graphics of the blue tick, the lack of transparency in the advertising archive and the lack of access to public data for researchers. The proceedings, which began on 18 December 2023, aim to verify whether X, acquired by Musk in 2022, has complied with the obligations under the DSA in managing illegal content and preventing information manipulation. The investigation into these points remains open.
With his tweet, Musk is not limiting himself to a political judgement: he is also marking a moment of tension between European regulatory policies and the strategies of US tech giants. The underlying issue remains the same: how to balance freedom, platform responsibility and national sovereignty.
