US President Donald Trump outlines his vision for American foreign policy based on “America first”

The new US National Security Strategy, released by the White House, outlines the Trump administration’s vision for American foreign policy, based on the principle of “America first”. The 33-page document highlights a greater military presence in the Western Hemisphere to combat immigration, drug trafficking and the rise of rival powers, with a primary focus on protecting the national territory.

The text devotes particular attention to Europe, which it defines as being in decline, with political, demographic and economic challenges. The White House stresses the need to strengthen the confidence of individual nations, resist the influence of the European Union and prevent excessive dependence on external partners, as highlighted by the war in Ukraine. The administration aims to stabilise European economies, facilitate post-war reconstruction and preserve the continent’s security and cultural identity, while reaffirming the strategic importance of transatlantic trade and European scientific and cultural institutions.

The strategy also points to the need to reduce the perception of a perpetually expanding NATO and to negotiate rapid cessations of hostilities, arguing that some European states risk losing sufficient economic and military capabilities to remain reliable allies. The stated goal is to help Europe regain confidence, national identity and political stability, while promoting the influence of patriotic parties and democratic institutions.

On the Asian front, the strategy defines China as the main economic and geopolitical challenge, with a global centre of gravity shifting towards the Indo-Pacific. The United States intends to rebalance its trade relationship with Beijing, protecting critical supply chains, intellectual property and strategic industrial sectors, while strengthening military deterrence and cooperation with regional allies, including India, Japan and Australia in the Quad. The strategy aims to prevent conflicts over Taiwan and in the South China Sea, ensuring free trade and US military superiority in the region.

The document emphasises the importance of technological and industrial leadership, with investments in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and autonomous systems. The combination of disciplined economic policy and military deterrence aims to maintain US primacy, protect strategic supply chains and strengthen cooperation with allies committed to countering predatory practices and preserving global stability.

In summary, Trump’s new strategy emphasises three main pillars: border protection and security in the Western Hemisphere, support for a strong and independent Europe, and economic and military competition in the Indo-Pacific, combining diplomacy, military deterrence and technological leadership to ensure long-term American security and prosperity.
