Former French president begins prison sentence after conviction, while his children call on supporters to demonstrate in Paris

Tomorrow, 21 October 2025, Nicolas Sarkozy will officially enter La Santé prison in Paris, beginning his five-year sentence following his conviction for criminal conspiracy in the case of illegal financing of his election campaign by Muammar Gaddafi. The former president has refused the offer of a single cell and will spend his first night in an 11-square-metre cell with a sealed window, a small television and no mobile phone. He will take two books with him: The Count of Monte Cristo and The Life of Jesus by Jean-Christian Petitfils.

Meeting with Macron before entering prison

Last Friday, four days before his imprisonment, Sarkozy met with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. According to sources close to the Élysée, the meeting preceded the enforcement of the sentence and took place in an atmosphere of institutional courtesy.

Demonstration of support by Nicolas Sarkozy’s sons

Louis Sarkozy, the former president’s son, posted a video on social media inviting citizens to participate in a demonstration of solidarity in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. Pierre Sarkozy also relaunched the appeal, expressing affection and support for his father. Sarkozy’s entourage points out that this is a spontaneous initiative by his sons and supporters, without any formal organisation.

The affair is an exceptional event in French political history, with strong national and international resonance, and highlights the tensions between justice and popular consensus.
