Trump chooses Paul Ingrassia, a lawyer known for racist remarks and insults against Afro-Americans
The appointment of Paul Ingrassia as head of the Special Counsel sparks controversy due to his offensive comments about Martin Luther King and the African American community
Donald Trump has appointed Paul Ingrassia to head the Office of Special Counsel, sparking fierce controversy. The 30-year-old lawyer is known for racist remarks and for writing that he wants to cancel Martin Luther King Day, calling it an event that should be “thrown into the seventh circle of hell”.
The revelations, reported by Politico, also highlight contacts with white supremacists and messages in favour of martial law to aid Trump’s re-election in 2020. The confirmation of the appointment in the Senate, scheduled for Thursday, is at risk: Republican majority leader John Thune and three other senators have already announced that they will vote against it.
Trump’s choice highlights the president’s controversial political strategy, while public debate grows over Ingrassia’s suitability for a sensitive position such as Special Counsel.
