The US president accuses the newspaper of defamation and libel over alleged links to Jeffrey Epstein.

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has decided to sue the New York Times for defamation, following articles linking the tycoon to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said he had “the great honour of filing a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit” against “one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the history of our country”.

The president accused the newspaper of operating in a biased manner in favour of the Democrats and of allowing them to lie and slander him freely for too long. “They have been allowed to lie, defame and slander me freely for too long,” Trump wrote, emphasising the seriousness of the allegations and the scope of his legal action.

The move represents the latest chapter in the long-running feud between Trump and the New York Times, which the former president has often accused of political attacks and coverage of stories unfavourable to him. The amount sought, £10 billion, makes this one of the most significant defamation cases in recent US history.
