The Russian president rejects accusations of threatening Europe and reiterates his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO
The Kremlin’s denial – ‘Russia does not want to attack anyone.’ With these words, Vladimir Putin responded to European concerns about the risk of aggression from Moscow. Speaking in Beijing alongside Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the Kremlin leader called accusations of possible Russian attacks against EU countries ‘a provocation or a sign of incompetence.’
The Ukraine issue – Putin also reiterated that Ukraine’s entry into NATO is ‘unacceptable’ to the Russian Federation. He stressed that the situation is different when it comes to Kiev’s accession to the European Union, to which Moscow would not oppose.
Security at the centre – The Russian president made it clear that any peace agreement must protect his country’s security. “Of course, it is up to Ukraine to decide how to ensure its own security. But this cannot be guaranteed at the expense of other states, particularly Russia,” he said.
