Macron to Netanyahu: ‘Risk of international isolation and rise in anti-Semitism’

Israeli ground troops advance on the outskirts of Gaza City ahead of the planned offensive to capture the northern sector of the city, targeting Hamas’ last strongholds. The army has announced that the 99th Division has struck surface and underground infrastructure, destroying several observation posts, while the 162nd Division is engaged in Jabalia and the northern suburbs to eliminate militants and dismantle their operational networks.

In the south, the 36th Division continues operations in Khan Younis with the support of the air force, which has eliminated several agents and struck strategic infrastructure. In a joint operation by military intelligence and Shin Bet, an air raid killed Mahmoud al-Asoud, Hamas’s general security commander in the western part of the Strip, considered a prominent figure in the Islamist movement. A naval weapons depot and an arms maintenance facility were also bombed.

According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza, ten Palestinians, including two children, have died in the last 24 hours from starvation or related causes. This brings the total death toll from malnutrition to 313, including 119 minors.

Meanwhile, in Washington, President Donald Trump is preparing to chair a “major meeting” at the White House on the “comprehensive plan” for post-war management of Gaza, as announced by his special envoy Steve Witkoff. Speaking to Fox News, Witkoff stressed that the project reflects “the president’s humanitarian motivations”, without providing further details. His words mark the first official admission of a US plan for the so-called day after, which until now had been left to Arab allies.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a letter addressed to Benjamin Netanyahu, warned that the reoccupation of Gaza City and the forced displacement of Palestinians risk isolating Israel and fuelling anti-Semitism around the world. ‘France cannot resign itself to seeing a friend like Israel sink into a spiral of violence contrary to its democratic essence,’ Macron wrote, adding that the fight against anti-Semitism cannot become a political tool or justify current policies in the Palestinian Territories.
