The Trump administration removes climate reports from NASA websites
Publication of scientific assessments on climate change revoked: data no longer accessible online
The Trump administration has decided to stop publishing climate change reports on NASA’s official website, making it more difficult to access scientific assessments required by law. The decision, announced in the last few hours, represents a further step towards the US executive’s obscuring of environmental information.
Until a few weeks ago, documents relating to the National Climate Assessment were available on globalchange.gov, a government portal dedicated to monitoring the effects of climate change. Now, however, this site has also been blocked. The White House had announced that NASA would take over the publication of the data, but yesterday the final stop came: ‘NASA has no legal obligation to host that content,’ said Bethany Stevens of the space agency’s press office.
The latest report, published in 2023, highlighted serious risks to the health, safety and economic well-being of American citizens, with a particularly severe impact on minority communities, including Native Americans.
The administration’s decision has provoked harsh reactions. Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech, said: ‘That document was written for the American people, paid for by taxpayers, and contains vital information we need to protect ourselves in a changing climate.’
John Holdren, former science advisor to the White House during the Obama administration, also accused the current government of deliberately censoring and covering up scientific assessments: ‘It’s a systematic effort to hide the reality of climate change,’ he commented.
Meanwhile, with the increase in extreme weather events, from droughts to fires to hurricanes, the unavailability of public scientific data risks seriously compromising the country’s response and prevention capabilities.
