Iran US tensions escalate as Trump weighs strike options

Iran US tensions escalate as Trump weighs strike options ahead of Geneva talks. Tehran warns any American attack would be an act of aggression amid reports of potential U.S. military action

Geneva talks framed as a decisive test – Iran US tensions escalate as Trump weighs strike options ahead of a new round of negotiations scheduled for Thursday in Geneva, with officials on both sides signaling that the outcome could shape the next phase of the standoff.

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, wrote on X that the talks are “a test for Trump and will determine whether American soldiers go to hell or return to America,” underscoring the high stakes Tehran associates with the meeting.

Tehran warns of “act of aggression”

The sharp rhetoric follows reporting by The New York Times that President Donald Trump is evaluating a targeted strike against Iran. Responding to those reports, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said any U.S. military action — even a limited strike — would be considered “an act of aggression.”

“An act of aggression will remain an act of aggression,” Baghaei said during a press briefing, signaling that Tehran would not differentiate between limited and broader military action.

The exchange reflects how Iran US tensions escalate as Trump weighs strike options in parallel with diplomatic efforts, leaving uncertainty over whether negotiations will defuse or deepen the crisis.

Reports of phased military planning

According to sources cited by The New York Times, Trump told advisers that if diplomacy — or an initial limited U.S. strike — fails to compel Iran to abandon its nuclear program, he would consider a much broader military operation in the coming months aimed at removing Iran’s leadership.

While no final decision has been made, advisers reportedly said the president is inclined to carry out an initial strike within days. The objective would be to demonstrate to Iranian leaders that they must agree to relinquish the capability to build a nuclear weapon.

Potential targets under consideration reportedly include the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, nuclear facilities across the country, and elements of Iran’s ballistic missile program.

Broader military action under consideration

If those measures do not persuade Tehran to accept U.S. demands, Trump has told advisers he would consider a larger military attack before the end of the year, with the stated aim of toppling Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

As Iran US tensions escalate as Trump weighs strike options, the Geneva talks now stand as a pivotal moment. Diplomacy remains formally on the table, but the parallel discussion of military contingencies underscores how fragile the situation has become.
