Peter Mandelson arrested by Metropolitan Police in London

Peter Mandelson arrested by Metropolitan Police in London

Peter Mandelson arrested by Metropolitan Police in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Government to release files on his US ambassador appointment amid political controversy.

Arrest in Camden – Peter Mandelson arrested by Metropolitan Police in London on Monday, February 23, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

In a statement cited by Sky News, police said a 72-year-old man was detained at an address in the Camden area and taken to a police station for questioning. The arrest followed the execution of search warrants at two properties located in Wiltshire and Camden. Mandelson has previously denied any wrongdoing.

The development marks a significant escalation in a case that has drawn political and media scrutiny in recent weeks.

Government to release appointment files

The arrest comes as the British government confirmed that the first tranche of documents related to Mandelson’s appointment as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States will be published in early March.

Darren Jones, chief secretary to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, told the House of Commons that the files would be released on a rolling basis. A document connected to the ongoing investigation will be made public at a later stage, in coordination with police authorities.

Earlier this month, Members of Parliament voted to compel the government to disclose all documentation concerning Mandelson’s diplomatic appointment. According to Sky News, the material involved runs into the thousands of pages.

Conservative shadow minister Mike Wood criticized the timing of the publication, accusing the government of proceeding “with the urgency of a tired sloth on a bank holiday Monday.”

Withdrawal from the House of Lords and Labour Party

At the beginning of the month, after being recalled in September from his post as ambassador to the United States following initial revelations tied to files related to the Epstein case, Mandelson announced his resignation from the House of Lords, effective February 4. He also left the Labour Party amid mounting political and media pressure linked to information emerging from the latest release by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Resigning from the upper chamber does not automatically revoke a peerage title. The title of Lord can only be removed through specific legislation passed by Parliament. The government has indicated it will consider new rules on the matter, while Prime Minister Starmer has said it would not be appropriate for Mandelson to continue using the title.

Peter Mandelson arrested by Metropolitan Police in London remains under investigation as authorities continue their inquiries.
