US president assesses the situation in Ukraine and reiterates his foreign policy

Donald Trump has expressed strong doubts about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the difficulties arising from hatred between the leaders of the two warring countries. In an interview with NBC News, the US president said the situation is complicated, with ‘tremendous’ hatred between the two men, referring to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, without explicitly mentioning them. ‘There are also differences between the soldiers and the generals. They fought hard for three years,’ Trump added.

Despite these difficulties, Trump said that reaching an agreement might be possible, but with some reservations: ‘I hope so, we are closer with one side, maybe not so close with the other’. The president emphasised the importance of the agreement with Kiev for Ukrainian rare earths and criticised the management of funds for the war, pointing the finger at his predecessor Joe Biden: ‘This is Biden’s war. It would never have started with me.’

Trump also spoke of the need to save the lives of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers, pointing out that there are 5,000 casualties per week, and indicated that there will be a time when he will say ‘go ahead, keep being stupid’ if a solution is not reached.

On foreign policy, Trump reiterated that he did not rule out the use of military force to annex Greenland, a strategic territory for US security. While retracing his steps with regard to Canada, Trump insisted on the need for the country to take greater responsibility for its defence.

Finally, Trump reaffirmed his position on Iran, stating that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons, but that he would be willing to listen to requests for the development of civil nuclear energy, although he fears this could lead to military conflict.
