Minister Araghchi confirms resumption of indirect negotiations in the Italian capital. Meetings with France, Germany and the UK also expected

The next round of indirect talks between Iran and the US on the nuclear dossier will be held again in Rome. This was announced by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, confirming that the meeting was set for Saturday, with Oman mediating. After the first meeting in Muscat and the second already held in Rome on 19 April at the Omani embassy, the negotiations are continuing, alternating locations, but it is the Italian capital that will host them again for logistical reasons.

‘Every negotiation starts from divergences,’ explained Araghchi, “and the goal is to overcome them in order to reach a common understanding”. The Iranian diplomacy chief added that, on Friday, also in Rome, a delegation from the Islamic Republic will meet representatives of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the three European countries guarantors of the nuclear agreement signed in 2015.

‘Although we have a minor role today due to wrong policies, we are ready to confront them in a serious way,’ Araghchi said. However, tensions with European chancelleries remain high. The Iranian representation at the UN described as ‘unacceptable’ the recent statements by the French minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who had threatened the reinstatement of sanctions suspended ten years ago if Europe’s security interests were not guaranteed when the nuclear agreement expired.

The negotiations, while taking place indirectly, represent a new attempt to reactivate diplomatic channels after years of tensions following the unilateral US exit from the agreement in 2018.
