Trump revives on tariffs, China responds with 34% tariffs
Trade tension grows: Beijing denounces US at WTO, Europe seeks dialogue. Deadline for TikTok slipped
Donald Trump pulls straight in his trade strategy and promises that tariffs “will never change.” China’s response was not long in coming: starting Wednesday, April 10, Beijing will introduce 34 percent tariffs on all imports from the United States, hitting U.S. agricultural products in particular. In parallel, the Chinese government has filed a complaint with the WTO accusing Washington of “grossly violating multilateral trade rules” and adopting a “unilateral bullying practice.”
From Florida, the U.S. president downplays, “The Chinese have panicked. My policies will not change. It’s a great time to get rich.” Trump lays claim to the success of the tariffs, saying that “they are already working,” supported also by the employment numbers, with 228,000 new jobs created in March.
Despite the hard line, the president shows openings on the diplomatic front. With Vietnam – hit by 46 percent tariffs – he reports having had a “productive phone call” with leader To Lam, who is ready to reset tariffs if a deal is reached. Trump also extended the deadline for the sale of TikTok to U.S. investors by 75 days: “We’ve made tremendous progress. Now there are two and a half more months to finalize a deal.”
In Europe, the response is marked by caution. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic called the 20 percent U.S. tariffs “harmful and unjustified” and initiated talks with Washington, assuring that Brussels is “prepared to defend its interests.” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hopes this crisis will open a broader debate on Europe’s role in global trade. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani clarified that Italy cannot negotiate alone: “It is the competence of the EU, but we can act within that perimeter.”
