A new volcanic eruption has forced the evacuation of the Icelandic town. More than 200 tremors preceded the opening of a fissure half a kilometre long

The Icelandic authorities have activated the alert on the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland following a new volcanic eruption that has necessitated the evacuation of Grindavik. The town, which has already been affected by similar events in the past, has been evacuated as a precautionary measure by the Civil Defence.

Seismic swarm and warning signs
Experts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office detected intense underground magmatic activity in the early morning hours. At 6.30 a.m. (8.30 a.m. in Italy), a seismic swarm with more than 200 tremors hit the area, accompanied by obvious ground deformations between Sundhnuk and Grindavik. Initial analyses suggested the possibility of an imminent eruption and, at around 9.45 a.m., a fissure of about half a kilometre opened up in the earth’s crust.

Beneath the surface, magma has already extended about eleven kilometres, an unprecedented length compared to previous eruptions, including those of November 2023.

Evacuation and increasing risk
As the seismic activity intensified, the Civil Defence ordered the evacuation of Grindavik, a town of about 3,500 inhabitants located in the immediate vicinity of the rupture. The authorities urged the population to leave the area quickly, warning that the current phenomenon could prove more dangerous than recent events.

Scientists continue to monitor the situation as Iceland once again comes to terms with the strength of its volcanoes.
