Russian negotiators, in a ‘constructive and combative’ spirit, aim to make progress in talks with the US, despite tensions over the Ukraine dossier and the Black Sea ceasefire
Russia is preparing for Monday’s talks with the US in Riyadh with a ‘constructive and combative spirit’, according to Grigory Kasarin, a former diplomat and head of the Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee. Kasarin, who will lead the Russian delegation together with Sergey Beseda, expressed hope of achieving some progress while maintaining a strict line.
The talks will be held separately with US and Ukrainian negotiators, with the aim of discussing possible ceasefire solutions. However, according to Russian analysts, the Kremlin’s position remains firm: Russia wants to maintain control over the occupied territories, prevent Ukraine’s entry into NATO, and strengthen its influence in the region.
The White House recently emphasised, after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the importance of a ceasefire and a halt to attacks against energy infrastructure, but so far there have been no concrete results.
Observers note that Putin, despite public statements that he wants peace, continues to take a hard line on the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian president is trying to exploit Trump’s push for short-term gains while keeping his long-term goals intact.
According to analysts in Moscow, another crucial point in the Riyadh talks is the possible revival of bilateral relations between Russia and the US, a topic that seems to be of increasing importance in the negotiations.
However, it is clear that the diplomatic breakthrough is attributed to a reversal of Washington’s stance towards Russia, rather than a change in the Kremlin’s positions.
