Istanbul Mayor Imamoglu’s arrest confirmed: protests in the city
The Istanbul court formalised the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu as part of a corruption investigation. Protests continue despite a ban on gatherings extended until 26 March
The Istanbul court officially confirmed the arrest of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption charges four days after his detention. The news fuelled further protests in the city, with thousands of protesters continuing to defy the ban on gatherings imposed by the governor’s office, which extended the restrictions until 26 March.
The authorities have also restricted access to Istanbul for anyone suspected of taking part in the demonstrations, but despite this, tensions on the streets of the Turkish metropolis remain high.
