The bombastic campaign announcements made by President Donald Trump on the possibility of an early end to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza clash with harsh reality, making the White House tenant’s goal more difficult than expected. This is indicated by an analysis by CNN journalist Stephen Collinson, who highlights the difficulties Trump is encountering. Despite small progress on a ceasefire in Ukraine, the truce in the Gaza Strip has been shattered by recent Israeli raids.
Collinson notes that Trump’s phone call with Vladimir Putin raised concerns among Ukraine’s allies, highlighting a possible rapprochement with Moscow, which could weaken the peace process. Although Trump obtained a commitment to reduce Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, hostilities towards other civilian targets continue. The US is planning further talks in the Middle East to extend the ceasefire to the Black Sea and achieve lasting peace.
Meanwhile, Israel’s resumption of bombing of Gaza has complicated the efforts of White House envoy Steve Witkoff, slowing the release of hostages and jeopardising a broader peace agreement between Israel and the Arab states.
Collinson’s analysis highlights that, like Putin, Netanyahu also has political objectives related to the continuation of the war, making Trump’s peaceful aspirations even more complex.
