Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams will return home after months in orbit, mission with political implications
SpaceX’s mission to bring NASA astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams back to Earth has successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS). The two astronauts have been in orbit since last June. The Crew Dragon capsule, developed by Elon Musk’s space company, was launched Friday evening from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. On board the spacecraft were American astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, along with Japan’s Takuya Onishi and Russia’s Kirill Peskov.
Crew Dragon’s return with the NASA astronauts is scheduled for 19 March at the earliest, the US space agency confirmed. Wilmore and Williams had arrived at the ISS in June aboard Boeing’s Starliner, but technical problems with the spacecraft prolonged their stay in space beyond what was planned.
The mission took on political significance when President Donald Trump declared that he had personally asked Elon Musk to intervene to bring home ‘the two brave astronauts who were abandoned in space by the Biden administration’.
