Education Secretary Linda McMahon announces funding cut to Columbia University over anti-Semitism and lack of protection for Jewish students

President Donald Trump’s administration announced the cutting of contracts and grants worth $400 million to Columbia University, accusing the institution of failing to adequately protect its Jewish students against anti-Semitism. Education Secretary Linda McMahon pointed out that universities must comply with federal anti-discrimination laws in order to continue receiving government funding.

‘Columbia has failed in its duty to protect Jewish students on its campus,’ McMahon said. The decision marks a strong stance by the Trump administration against anti-Semitism in educational institutions, with the goal of ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

Columbia University’s Response

A spokesperson for Columbia University confirmed that the institution is currently reviewing the measures taken by the government and expressed its intention to work with federal authorities to restore funding. ‘We are committed to combating anti-Semitism and ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff,’ the spokesperson said in a statement.

The university reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining an inclusive and safe academic environment for all, emphasising its commitment to combating all forms of discrimination.

This action reflects the administration’s willingness to crack down on institutions that fail to comply with federal civil rights regulations, and attention remains high on Columbia’s response and the government’s next steps.
